A Blessed Memorial Day to you all, Friends in Christ,
It is a happy celebration kicking off the start of summer! It is also a day of remembrance for all of those who have fallen while serving our country. I know many of you who also see it as a day to decorate the graves of our loved ones.
Did you know that Memorial Day was declared a federal holiday in 1971? But "Decoration Days" were happening as early as 1865, after the American Civil War, when our country was beset with the work of burying somewhere between 600,000 - 800,000 fallen soldiers, from both the Confederate and Union sides. African-American people who were former slaves - freed at the end of the war - started a day of remembrance in 1865, less than a month after the Confederacy surrendered. In 1996, this fact was discovered at Harvard in a box of Civil War records that no one had read before. Very interesting! Here you can read more from History.com: Freed Slaves Memorial Day
I hope that you had a good weekend, no matter how you spent it :)
Yesterday the church also observed a transitional time, which often falls around Memorial Day. We observed Trinity Sunday, which marks the transition from the season of feast and festival days into the time we call "Ordinary Time." This is that time when we can grow and learn about God, maybe pick up a good book to savor. Find time to learn something new.
