Hope you have been enjoying the weather today. It was brought to you by God the Creator of the Universe! I pray that you get some rain and enjoy the lower temperatures today, after such a toasty weekend!
I came across an interesting video recently, advertising "no commitment" mobile plans. It depicted about a dozen different 20-somethings in various different locations, each of them delivering a soundbite at a time about how they don't want to be tied down, they don't want commitment, they want to be able to just pick up at a moment's notice and go wherever they want to go. It got me wondering - is this why it is difficult to attract younger folks to church?
Obviously, "fear of commitment" isn't the only reason. It's just the tip of the iceberg. But I have begun to wonder if we live in an Attention Deficit Disordered world: fractured and fragmented by our many different commitments, our many different communities and relationships to people who live at opposite sides of the world.
As I look around at our sanctuary on a Sunday morning, my mind travels back to that nursery rhyme: "Here's the church, here's the steeple, open the doors and where's all the people?" There are empty pews in churches all across America. And it is not because community is dead. Community - even religious community - exists today. It is just not always in a church on Sundays. And a lot of it is in cyberspace, emoticons and text messaging, a community that is difficult to grasp with a handshake, a hug or a loving smile. I'd love it if you would weigh in on this topic.
If I can dredge up a link to that mobile phone commercial, I'll share it with you. It is illuminating about today's youth. We have to understand the world if we want to make it better.
All the more reason to get creative with our church's resources. For that reason, I have begun to think of Fellowship Hall more like a big living room/hangout. We use it for Rummage Sales, suppers, parties, meetings, and now yoga classes and movie nights.
Remember God's house is your house too. You are invited to be with us for any and all that goes on.
