Hope that this week is off to a good start, even if bitterly cold!
Last week was such a topsy-turvy with much happening, quite a few meetings (4 nights). I am pretty sure it was our God propping me up during the sermon Sunday! (I'm sure you all have had weeks like that!)
Of major importance, our Elders had a serious discussion about the meaning of church membership and the significance of those vows we make when we join the church. Those vows are also the same that we make when we are baptized (or if you were an infant, your parents made similar promises).
This conversation happened because several different people have brought up the topic with me over the last several weeks, and it has prompted me to formalize a "program" to present to persons interested in church membership. Therefore, this past Sunday, I started a new series of "Time out for Teaching" moments during worship, discussing topics pertaining to membership.
Not only is it important to our organization and its integrity of faith, it's uplifting to us all to think more deeply on what these promises mean:
1. Trusting in the gracious mercy of God, do you turn from the ways of sin and renounce evil and its power in the world?
2. Who is your Lord and Savior?
3. Will you be Christ’s faithful disciple, obeying his Word and showing his love?
Please come and explore these things with me on Sundays, starting this Sunday, January 21st in worship.
Speaking of January 21st, this is Potluck Sunday. That means, each person brings a dish to share with the rest of the congregation. Did you know, the Greek word, "Koinonia" can mean "sharing," "fellowship" and even "participation"? That's what our church family dinners are - a participation in the fellowship following worship. In fact, it is an extension of our our worship from sanctuary to hall. Let's make it a special time of sharing!
